The Faculty of Law is very proud to announce the recent appointment of Justice Nathalie Des Rosiers as a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Toronto. From 2013 to 2016, Justice Des Rosiers was Dean of the Common Law Section and from 2004 to 2008 she was Dean of the Droit Civil Section.
This appointment crowns an exceptional and diversified career in the service of law, education and justice. Prior to this appointment, she was the Principal of Massey College since August 2019, cross appointed to the Faculty of Law of University of Toronto and a Senior Fellow of Trinity College.
Justice Des Rosiers served as General Counsel of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (2009-2013), Interim Vice-President, Governance, University of Ottawa (2008-2009), and President of the Law Commission of Canada (2000-2004).
From 2016 to 2019, she represented the riding of Ottawa-Vanier in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario and was Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry from January to June 2018. Justice Des Rosiers co-edited The Oxford Handbook of Canadian Constitutional Law (2017) with Peter Oliver and Patrick Macklem. She also authored L’indemnisation des victimes de violence sexuelle et conjugale (Compensation for victims of sexual and domestic violence), with Louise Langevin and Marie-Pier Nadeau, which won the 2014 Walter Owen Book Prize from the Canadian Foundation for Legal Research.
Justice Des Rosiers has received many honours, including the Order of Canada in 2013, the Order of Ontario in 2012, an Honourary Doctorate from the UCL (Université catholique de Louvain) in Belgium in 2012, an Honourary Doctorate from the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Law Society of Upper Canada Medal, the NUPGE Award and the APEX Partnership Award. She has an LL.B. from Université de Montréal, an LL.M. from Harvard Law School and is a member of the Royal Society of Canada.
