A team of international researchers, which included indigenous scholars as well as experts from the University of Ottawa, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, McMaster University and Adelphi University, has used high-resolution isotope profiling to trace the movements of a female woolly mammoth named "Élmayuujey’eh" (Elma) living 14,000 years ago. Published in Science Advances, the study sheds light on the relationship between mammoths and early hunter-gatherer communities in eastern Beringia, the region between the Lena River in Russia and Canada’s Mackenzie River.

Residence Safety Team at uOttawa Strengthens Student Safety
The University of Ottawa has introduced a pioneering initiative called the Residence Safety Team, funded by a $100,000 grant from Bell Let’s Talk. The team focuses on peer-to-peer support, especially after hours, to students living in residence.
The 30-member team engages in communication and rapport-building to help students by diffusing conflicts, guiding students to safety, and assisting them when they struggle with their mental health. They serve as a frontline response for student safety, working collaboratively with Protection Services, Residence Life, and Client Services.

Professor’s Canadian BIPOC Artists Rolodex Visions Comes to Life
Professor Jinny Yu, who teaches in the Department of Visual Arts, wanted to cover more BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) artists. The challenge was finding those artists. So began the Canadian BIPOC Artists Rolodex project, funded by a SSHRC Insight Development Grant. The project involved using an Airtable database to create an open-source digital platform that would gather, present, and disseminate knowledge about Canadian BIPOC artists.
