Classe à part : l’expérience interactive au cœur du cours DRC 4513
The following story was written by Elruma Dixon, 4th year student in Civil Law and International Development and Globalization (LLL/DVM), as part of the series BEYOND THE CLASS. The series shares first-hand accounts of experiential learning opportunities and op-eds written by our students.

As a bilingual student in the integrated program Civil Law (LL.L and International Development and Globalization, I have always had an interest in understanding legal and socio-political challenges at a global level. I am therefore very happy to have had the opportunity to attend the course "The legal and political order in Latin America and its relations with Canada" with Professor Pierre Gilles Bélanger.

What I liked most about this course is that it is at the crossroads between theory and practice, while offering a multitude of interactive and interesting activities. During our apprenticeship, among other things, we were able to draw many parallels between Canadian law and Chilean/Latin American law, which gave us a good perspective on comparative law.

My most memorable activity was the visit to the Kitigan Zibi Reserve, which was both fascinating and informative. We also had the chance to invite speakers who provided their expertise in relation to human rights, which greatly helped in the preparation of our case study in collaboration with other Chilean students before the ombudsmen. The expertise offered by the speakers, as well as the opportunity to be paired and to exchange with other Chilean students at the Faculty of Civil Law have greatly enriched my learning experience in this course.

All in all, I highly recommend the course to anyone with an interest in international law. The activities were for me an unforgettable experience during my last year at the Faculty of Civil Law at the University of Ottawa. In addition to gaining new knowledge and skills, I have forged new friendships and created very beautiful memories that will always stay with me.
