Mission, vision, mandate and values

Vision

The Human Rights Office (HRO) provides expertise within the institution to help build an inclusive University community that values, respects and celebrates every individual’s dignity and worth so they can reach their full potential.

Mission

The mission of the HRO is to foster a learning and working environment at the University of Ottawa where respect, wellness, safety and inclusion for all are priorities. To achieve this, the HRO provides equitable, impartial and effective advisory, prevention and support services.

Mandate

The HRO plays a leadership role within the University of Ottawa by providing staff and students with advisory, prevention and support services in the areas of:

  • inclusion;
  • employment equity;
  • accessibility;
  • prevention of harassment and discrimination
  • prevention of sexual violence;
  • rights and responsible conduct.

The HRO is responsible for receiving and responding to human rights complaints in an effective and impartial manner. It develops, implements and assesses human rights regulations and procedures.

Harassment and discrimination

All University community members have a right to a learning and work environment that’s respectful, safe and free from harassment and discrimination. Everyone is responsible for maintaining this environment, in accordance with University of Ottawa Policy 67a — Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination.

The anti-racism and anti-hate Hub is a centralized platform that provides key information about anti-racism and anti-hate work at the University of Ottawa.

The Accessibility Hub offers tools and resources to help students, educators and administrators identify and remove barriers to accessibility, and provides support for individuals experiencing mental health issues. It helps promote inclusion and improve accessibility for everyone on our campus.

The University of Ottawa is committed to maintaining a campus that promotes respect for the dignity of every individual, and a community that is free from sexual violence. Sexual violence is not tolerated.
